10 Earth Day Picture Books for Early Elementary Students

Loving, caring for, and appreciating Earth is so important! Teaching kids about all the Earth does for us, and all we can do for Earth is something we can do ALL year, but ESPECIALLY on Earth Day! Kids learn so much from picture books and these are my favorites to read to my class on Earth Day.

This book is simple for students to understand the how and why we should help protect the earth.

It gives little ways we can work to help the earth.

Kids can help the earth in small ways everyday! This book has fun lift the flap pages to help engage students in different small ways to help the earth.

This beautifully written story helps students to understand the impact we have on nature and our oceans. When children see how trash and plastic use affect animals, they will be sure to want to help cut down on plastic use and make a difference.

Why should we protect nature? This book tells you exactly why in kid terms with examples students will be able to understand.

We love Charlie and Lola books! The characters are so relatable and the stories are funny. We really enjoyed reading this book and learning about why we should recycle.

What happens when the earth does too much for us and is not taken care of? It gets sick and needs a break. This book is a cute story about what happens when the world takes a break. It is very relatable to the pandemic lockdown and will get students thinking and making connections.

I am always a fan of Mary Nhin's books during my SEL Lessons and this book is no different!


Children can learn about how our small choices can impact Earth in big ways.

Teaching students all the earth does is a great way to help them understand why we need to take care of it. This book introduces Earth in a kid-friendly way.

There are truly so many picture books about our earth and how to protect it, but these are 10 of my favorites! I hope you enjoy them too and are able to add one or two to your classroom or home library. It's amazing what kids will want to do to help protect our planet.
